LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Issue 5: Untitled (Backstage), 2009

Dear Readers,

September/October in London, Europe and NY alike the creative industries are busier than ever. Each city with its respective fashion week, auction season and design week topped by fair after fair of contemporary art. In London, Frieze and Zoo art fairs are accompanied by every gallery pulling out all the stops, exhibiting their ‘best most exciting’ artists.  This year also sees the opening of new spaces with new collections, new curators with new initiatives all coming to culmination over the period of one very busy month filled with private receptions and VIP after-parties celebrating all that is new and cultural.  This issue takes a look at what this is all about, the art, the culture, the artists and their practice, what goes into it, where is it going and how did it all start?

Issue 5 is about the work and what is happening backstage, in the studio, in the design house. In the midst of all buzz and hype INTRODUCING has decided to hand over to the artist, creating an issue that highlights work in progress, opinions from those who make more than just opinions and bringing to the foreground the thoughts and work of some of the most exciting new young artists working right now.  This issue’s CONCEIVE features interviews and articles purely from the point of view of the artist also featuring an ongoing body of work from photographer Lucas Liccini and an article looking over the genius of designer Martin Margiela after his 20th anniversary as head of Maison Martin Margiela.

This month’s issue is accompanied by OVERZEALOUS, a show of a selection of our current artists’ works, bringing together some of London’s most exciting talents. OVERZEALOUS will also feature the beginning of an ongoing association between INTRODUCING and new design collaborative Parallel Projects further exemplifying the ethos of our current issue.

We hope that you continue to enjoy the cultural season made possible by the sweat and tears behind the scene!

Yours Faithfully,

The Editors,

Theresa Liang  & William West
